This, is a great theme that I have not used in the past. I was a little worried how the children would react to it and it's contents. I was pleasantly surprised at how engaged the children were to the materials and the lesson plans that this first week held. Mother Goose Time provides me the curriculum box free of charge in exchange for me blogging for them. I have seen first hand how well my children have grown using MGT. I do have a teaching background so it would be super ease for me to create lesson plans. However, I prefer Mother Goose Time ones. I just add things that fit the Army standards as well. Before using MGT I would spend hours upon hours now I spend maybe 5 hours total all month. This helps me be a better provider and puts my focus back on the children.
This week we learned about cameras, airplanes and boats and globes. They were very into setting all the activities out and doing them all. I love to see what they come up with and say about each activity and lesson that MGT provides.
Cameras: We talked about what all great things we can capture by taking photos with a camera and keeping them for years to come. The children were provided materials from MGT to make a camera. Then, we talked about the photos that were provided and where they where around the world. We talked about how it was a great idea to take a camera on your adventure to capture the memories you make and places you go and things you see.. As a class we went on a walk and the children took turns taking photos along our walk of things that they liked. We will use these to make collages for our portfolios when they come in.
Airplanes and Boats: We discussed how boats and airplanes are used for people to travel around the world. We talked about if each person had been on either and if so where they had gone. We talked about our dream vacation and how we would get there. Then, I sat all the supplies out for the children to create an airplane using the inspiration photo as a focus point. One child let me know that these were old airplanes and they are not used because they aren't safe anymore. I let them know they are used but not to hold large amounts of people. One child told me planes need to have beds so he can sleep on the plane rides. We tagged the map of the places they had traveled to.
Globes: We have lots of globes around the room. We discussed how the globe shows the different parts of the world. I had ask the parents prior where their families came from. We tagged these places on the map. We talked about what types of food, music and activities that each of these cultures do. We also held a family pot luck It's a Small World party with another provider that uses MGT as well. We had our parents bring in one dish that was native to where they came from. We made a very multicultural party with globes and flags as decorations. We had rice from Puerto Rico, beirocks from Germany, beef, chicken and banana lumpa from the Philippines, a sweet panipopo treat from our Samoan family, lasagna from an american family, and many more. It was the best part and way to show the children about everyone and their family and their culture.
