Jellyfish: During, our circle time we talked about what a jellyfish is and how many different kinds there were. We watched a clip on what jellyfish do and how to care for jellyfish sting. My older children were shocked that some are as small as a finger nail and that they sting as well. For art we did jellyfish hats. The children were shocked to see that we were using hair nets for the jelly fish body. A few did actually wear the hat around and pretend that they were jellyfish. We did this with my older children. I also give them paper and had them draw what they thought a jellyfish looked like in the ocean. This was my activity to bring their creative side in.
X-Ray Fish: We talked about what an x-ray fish was. The children said they had never heard of that before. For art, the children were given supplies and asked to create their own x-ray fish using the inspiration photo. One older child thought the fish should be white to be see through. This one, was harder for the children to grasp so we didn't spend as much time on it.
Seahorse: One child looked at the make and play photo and told me seahorses don't have hair. So we watched a video about Seahorses to see if they had hair or not. The children were given the materials and allowed to freely create their own seahorse as they liked. We also did the counting seahorses game. The children loved taking the cards out of the envelopes and putting them back in.
Rainbow Fish: We started off by reading our Rainbow Fish book. We talked about how he shared his things and then he became very happy and had friends to play with. We discussed what made us happy. The children were given art materials to freely create their Rainbow Fish.
Sea Stars: The children let me know these are called starfish. We did their art using materials freely. I happen to have sand dollars and sea star and we explored them and found what was similar and different between them all. The children then read the What am I? book. Even my two year old was able to say the animals by looking at the pictures. Then, my older children took it farther by saying what they think that the animal was going to do or was doing.
