The children had a great time this week with the activities. I love how Mother Goose Time helps with the children learn a variety of topics using themes that are not the typical norm. This has allowed my children experience that they may never had in these areas. I have used my own made curriculum for over 5 years but it was always the same themes: Transportation, Farm, Ocean, Dinosaur, My body, Emotions, Community Helpers, Zoo, Jungle, Dr. Seuss, Valentine's, Christmas, Thanksgiving, St. Patrick's Day. Just to name a few. Yet, I never really thought of many of these new themes. It has been amazing to see all these new themes.
The children loved making their mask and it happened to be on Mardi Gras when we made them. I talk to the children about some different places where children make mark and what they use to make them. I set out all the supplies and allow the children the freely create their own mask in any way they desire. I made colored glue by simply adding some paint into the glue. The children were allowed to use this to create their mask. Then. they also had sequins and feathers to add to them. I love watching how each child's mind works at creating a mask. Some used lots of feathers and some only used sequins.
Pattern cards are a great tool to throw in to target many development areas. I use them to match shapes, learning colors, counting, communication skills, social skills. So many areas can happen in one activity. We did a rotation system to make sure that everyone got a chance to use and do each card. We did three shape cards and one people counter page. My younger ones were able to do the people counters. We count them as they put them down on the card. We also talked about what colors each where. They love these cards.
Lanterns were a great day as well. The children got to use scissors to focus on fine motor. For the children that were younger they just tore the paper into strips. Either way of doing it, they were able to use fine motor to do so. They then decorated the lanterns. I helped them staple them together to make it safer. Then, if they wanted to we hung them from the ceiling in the daycare room. A few preferred to take them home. We watched videos about what they do at a Chinese Lantern Festival. During, this video it talked about their food that they eat as well. I used this to talk about Moon Balls before we made them. We made some plain with just a little cream cheese, ones with corn inside, mixed vegetates the children only ate the plain ones. They had a great time making them.
Mother Goose Time gives me all the supplies needed in exchange for my opinion on their boxes.
