I just wanted to take a second to talk about how important taking observations is. There are great benefits to the child as well as to the provider. Using observations in my daycare, allows me to track and see where the children are developmentally, what their interest are, their needs, and it can also help with behaviors. For the child, it allows us to learn about them and be able to focus on the child as an individual.
Doing observations also helps me in lesson planning. It shows me what areas the child needs help to ensure that I am meeting their individual needs. I use mailing labels to record only the facts of what the child are doing and not what I believe they are doing. This way I always have it at my fingertips.
Observations also help when preparing and sharing information at parent teacher conferences. I use TS Gold system to input all my information about my program. Lesson plans, observations, newsletters, and parent teacher conferences are just a few things that I am able to use from TS Gold.
Another great source is my Mother Goose Time curriculum they have all the areas laid out for me to easily see where the child should be and what areas each activity is. This helps me target the areas of development and make sure that I am expanding the child's development in all areas.
