"Empathy is a skill that experts from many disciplines have deemed important for personal, relationship and career success. People who are emphatic tend to have better social interactions, academic performance and accomplishments at work than others. " Taken from mine to ours.
I truly believe that nurturing empathy is very important to children. This should start by leading my example. I feel the best way for children to learn this is to have positive and nurturing role models.
This should be shown in children from birth and continue on as they grow. Children that learn this skill of having nurturing empathy are more likely to succeed and be successful than those children that are not given these chances to grow in empathy. Part of what I truly love about my job is this, seeing what the children learn from you and take on is the biggest reward of all for me.
We focused on a few activities this week: making our favorite dinosaur, fossil stamping, poster hunt and dino play dough stamping.
Making our favorite dinosaur: The children show empathy in this activity by asking their friends to pass the supplies to them using their word and manners. We do a family style art: This is where our materials are in the middle and children are encouraged to use their words to have other children pass them something they need to do their projects. My best example is with the glue bottle. We have two younger children that needed help squeezing the glue bottle. My older ones decided that they could help them squeeze the bottle or they could put it on a plate and use a brush to make it easier. I prefer the glue bottle to have them work on muscles in their hands. I was amazed by the consideration this older child had put into mind of how to help the little ones with the bottles.
Fossil Stamping: My younger ones have a hard time removing the foam pieces. Prior for a child I had pushed one side back so the child could grab the sticker easier. My little helper saw me do this and every time his buddy would get stuck he would say "ask me please for help". The other child would do so and the older child did the same thing for the younger child. I later heard him say it's ok Miss Amanda and I have your back." I'm blessed my older ones are always willing to help my younger ones out.
Poster Hunting: We used team work to help find the different objects. Then, we took turns one at a time doing so. If someone got stuck my big helper would tell them a color or area to look at. Love that they are willing to help the younger children in a positive way.
Dino Play Dough Stamping: This one is more about sharing the play dough toys and ask the friends to pass them or use them. We use this to focus on the proper way to use our words. To get what we want and to say thanks to those after.
Thank you mother goose time for allowing and foster such great opportunities.
